FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What is the difference between SATA and NVMe SSDs?
Short Answer:
SATA SSDs use the SATA interface and are limited by its bandwidth, while NVMe SSDs use the NVMe interface and offer higher data transfer rates. NVMe SSDs are generally faster than SATA SSDs.
Long Answer:
SATA and NVMe SSDs differ in interface, speed, latency, form factor, and compatibility. SATA SSDs use the SATA III interface with speeds around 500-600 MB/s, while NVMe SSDs use NVMe with significantly higher speeds, exceeding 7,000 MB/s for Gen4. NVMe SSDs have lower latency, often use the M.2 form factor, and require specific slots on the motherboard. SATA SSDs are more cost-effective and suitable for general users, while NVMe SSDs are pricier, offering top-tier performance for demanding tasks like large data transfers or gaming. The choice depends on performance needs, budget, and system compatibility.
2. Are Viathan SSDs compatible with my video game console?
PlayStation 3 / PS3:
- Compatible: 2.5 SATA SSD
- Not Compatible: PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD
- Not Compatible: PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD
PlayStation 4 / PS4:
- Compatible: 2.5 SATA SSD
- Not Compatible: PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD
- Not Compatible: PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD
PlayStation 5 / PS5:
- Not Compatible: 2.5 SATA SSD
- Not Compatible: PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD
- Compatible: PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD
Xbox 360:
- Not Compatible: 2.5 SATA SSD
- Not Compatible: PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD
- Not Compatible: PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD
It's important to note that attempting to use a standard 2.5" SATA hard drive or SSD as a replacement for the Xbox 360 hard drive is not supported, as the Xbox 360 uses a proprietary form factor and connection. If you need to upgrade the storage on an Xbox 360, you should look for official Microsoft-branded Xbox 360 hard drives that are compatible with your specific model.
Xbox One:
- Compatible: 2.5 SATA SSD
- Not Compatible: NVMe SSD
Xbox Series X and Series S:
- Not Compatible: SATA SSD
- Not Compatible: PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD
- Not Compatible: PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD
Both Xbox Series X and Series S have an expansion slot for proprietary NVMe SSDs called the "Xbox Storage Expansion Card." These cards are specifically designed for Xbox consoles and are the recommended way to expand storage.
3. What are the advantages of NVMe SSDs over SATA SSDs?
NVMe SSDs typically provide faster read and write speeds, lower latency, and better overall performance compared to SATA SSDs. They are especially beneficial for tasks that involve large data transfers and high I/O operations.
4. Are NVMe SSDs compatible with SATA ports?
No. NVMe SSDs use a different physical and electrical interface than SATA, so they are not directly compatible with SATA ports. You need an NVMe-compatible M.2 slot or PCIe slot on your motherboard for NVMe SSDs.
5. Can I use an NVMe SSD in a system that originally had a SATA SSD or HDD?
In most cases, yes. However, you need to ensure that your motherboard supports NVMe and has the appropriate slot. If your system doesn't have an NVMe slot, you may need an NVMe PCIe adapter.
6. Can I use SATA and NVMe SSDs together in the same system?
Yes, you can use both SATA and NVMe SSDs in the same system. They are independent storage devices, and compatibility depends on your motherboard and available slots.
7. What is the warranty period for Viathan SSDs and RAM?
3-Year Limited Warranty:
Viathan affirms that this product is devoid of defects in materials and workmanship, leading to product failure under normal usage conditions, as detailed on this page. This assurance extends for a period of 3 years from the original purchase date.

In instances where replacement is impractical, we retain the right to propose an alternative of equal or greater value (with the customer covering any additional costs).
This warranty is non-transferable and exclusively applies to the original purchaser. Proof of purchase is mandatory for all potential warranty claims.
Not Covered by the Warranty:
- Data loss
- Damage sustained during product return transit
- Failure or physical damage resulting from misuse, such as broken SATA interface pins, dents, or scratches
Warranty Becomes Void If:
- Expiration of the warranty period (3 years)
- Exceeding the Terabytes Written (TBW) limit of the product
- Taking the product to a third-party computer repair shop
- Altering the product, such as removing the SSD from the Metal SSD case or modifying the barcode, unless expressly permitted in writing by a Viathan staff member.
